All course times are listed in Central European Time

NEW! 2024 Update on the GREET LCA Model Approval

New 2024 Updates on the GREET LCA Model

  • Analyse the impact of the US Government’s approval of the use of the GREET model to calculate lifecycle GHG for SAF feedstocks

  • Understand how crop-based SAF will now be eligible to claim SAF tax credits

The SAF Feedstock Course will provide an excellent grounding in understanding the types of feedstocks that can be used, as well as their characteristics and challenges for use in SAF production.

It will also go into detail around some of the key challenges when comparing one SAF pathway over another, including feedstock availability, sustainability principles and criteria and understanding the maturity and readiness of their supply chains.

Course benefits

  • Understand the different types of feedstocks that can be used for SAF production based on different SAF technologies, including feedstock characteristics, quality and challenges for use in SAF production

  • Determine the global availability of feedstocks and feedstock limitations

  • Evaluate the regional availability and distribution of feedstocks and global trade

  • Determine feedstock readiness and maturity of supply chains to support SAF production

  • Understand the critical need for feedstock sustainability, determining the carbon intensity of feedstocks and sustainability verification within the context of ICAO CORSIA

Meet the trainer

SUSAN VAN DYK

Susan has been a biofuels expert for 15 years, with a core focus on conversion technologies for the production of drop-in biofuels and sustainable aviation biofuels (SAF).

Her expertise lies in the commercialization of various technology pathways for SAF production, including gasification and Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, pyrolysis and hydrothermal liquefaction and upgrading of biocrudes, lipid-based technologies, biochemical pathways, and co-processing of bio-intermediates within petroleum refineries.

Course outline and schedule

DAY 1

  • Feedstock Types: Which technologies use which feedstocks, characteristics and quality of feedstocks, challenges with SAF production (e.g. pretreatments)

  • Global availability of feedstocks, regional distribution, and feedstock limits (taking into account sustainability), focus on wastes and residues

  • Feedstock readiness and emerging feedstocks; existing supply chains; global trade; energy density of feedstocks and local use

DAY 2

  • Feedstock sustainability; CORSIA, sustainability principles and criteria; RSB and ISCC as sustainability verification bodies; carbon intensity of feedstocks; determination of CI through life cycle assessment; LCA models and critical differences; CORSIA LCA model, default CI and calculating actual CI; impact of CI on the “value” of SAF and impact of policies

  • Debate around using crop feedstocks, “banned” feedstocks and different policy approaches to feedstock sustainability,
    e.g. EU versus US
